Tinnitus Evaluation & Management
Tinnitus is a condition where a person hears sounds without any external source. These sounds may be described as ringing, buzzing, clicking, hissing, roaring, or whistling. The intensity can vary from mild to loud and may affect one ear, both ears, or sometimes feel as though it is coming from inside the head. In most cases, only the affected individual can hear these sounds. Tinnitus may occur with or without hearing loss.
Although the exact cause is not always clear, common triggers include hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, head injuries, side effects of certain medications, blood pressure fluctuations, earwax blockage, fluid buildup behind the eardrum, or underlying issues related to the heart, blood vessels, jaw, or neck.
A professional evaluation is essential to identify the underlying cause. You should consult a specialist if tinnitus occurs in only one ear, sounds like a heartbeat (pulsatile tinnitus), is accompanied by sudden hearing changes, ear pressure, dizziness, or balance issues.
Diagnosis involves a detailed audiological assessment. Management options may include Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), hearing aids, sound therapy devices, combination instruments, relaxation techniques, and counseling support, all tailored to reduce the impact of tinnitus and improve quality of life.
